Don’t Let Him In by Lisa Jewell Summary

Don’t Let Him In is a multi-perspective novel told via different timelines. It begins with Ash and her family grieving the sudden loss of their patriarch, well-renowned chef Paddy Swann, after a freak accident in which a vagrant pushed him onto the train tracks on his evening commute, and he was killed.

Shortly after this tragedy, Ash and matriarch Nina Swann receive a package from  Nick Radcliffe, a former associate of Paddy’s, sending his condolences and returning a lighter of Paddy’s for the family to retain as a memento. Shortly after, Nina reaches out to Nick, and a relationship develops, much to Ash’s displeasure. She instantly becomes suspicious of Nick’s motivations for his intense interest in her mother and begins digging into his past for answers.

Meanwhile, a past timeline details a marriage between a man and his wife, Tara, as he pantomimes the loving, caring husband while hiding ulterior motives. And, in a third timeline, we follow Martha, a young married wife to two boys and a newborn child, who is becoming increasingly frustrated with her husband Alistair’s lack of involvement in their family and marriage as his work has been causing him to travel for long periods, keeping him away from home.

As the story unfolds, these timelines converge, revealing a truly sinister and dark reality for each of these women.

Why I Picked It Up?

I have been exploring Lisa Jewell’s books for a while as I’ve seen how popular and well-received her works are in the mystery, thriller, and suspense genre. After finishing None of This Is True and enjoying the clever twists and way she didn’t pull her punches and created a dark and sinister suspense with a more than troubling antagonist, I was eager to see what she would do in her newest release. And boy, I was not disappointed!

My Reading Experience

This novel felt like a warning to women to be careful and selective of the men they entrust their hearts to and allow into their lives. It gives me the feeling that Lisa Jewell is a girl’s girl. She’ll keep it straight with you about the dark and devastating truth about the reality that there are predators out there prowling around and looking for just the right woman to run their dark game on.

I was even more fascinated learning that she became absorbed in the true crime documentaries The Tinder Swindler and Dirty John. And how the combination of the content in these docuseries, coupled with her personal life experience, inspired her to pen this novel.

Craft & Style

The structure and pace of this novel are magnificent. I enjoyed how she allowed you to realize some truths about the direction of the story early on. Yet, she still provided plenty of twists, turns, and reveals that you couldn’t have imagined were coming. Thus, it prevents this from becoming overly predictable.

Emotional Impact

Needless to say, I had very visceral reactions to the content of this novel. Jewell was masterful at creating such a realistic and disgusting villain that you couldn’t wait to see fail.  Honestly, she may have done too good a job with creating this character.

You also feel empathy for the women in these horrible situations. A reality that was illuminated for me was how easy it is to victim-blame or not realize the level of psychological abuse, control, and manipulation women in these situations go through, and how it’s not always easy to see the wolf in sheep’s clothing.

Representation

As I mentioned earlier, this novel gave off vibes as a warning to women. You could tell Jewell had a message to share and that her goal with this novel was to highlight how women in abusive relationships not only struggle with the abuse from their abuser but also harsh criticism and victim-blaming from society and the general public. She shares the reality these women are facing, juxtaposed with the manipulative tactics and machinations of these abusive predators to trap these women. Allowing you to see there are two sides to every situation.

Additionally, she shows how women coming together in solidarity is necessary in order to help women untangle themselves from these relationships and get the proper healing and support they need to recover.

Notable Strengths

Jewell’s ability to utilize literary devices such as misdirection, the unreliable narrator, foreshadowing, and multiple points of view and timelines creates a story with depth, complexity, and epic scope.

Potential Hurdles

This novel does a good job of giving domestic abuse victims their voice and dignity and placing the blame on the predators and abusers. It does rely heavily on the naiveté and gullibility of the characters a little too much.

Despite the inconsistencies that were adding up and didn’t make sense, they continued to believe the implausible. This didn’t ring true, and perhaps it would’ve been better to lean in on other truths that women find themselves stuck in such situations, aside from being naive and unaware, to create a more well-rounded and realistic truth.

Deeper Reflections

I encourage you to really pay attention to your thoughts and emotions while reading this novel. What visceral reactions are you having? Do you find yourself blaming the women? Can you spot how the abuser was manipulating and twisting reality to use against them? What would be the breaking point for you in these relationships, and how would you handle it?

Perhaps most importantly, if you saw a friend in a similar situation, what would you do and how would you protect them?

Who I’d Recommend This For?

I believe this novel is ideal for those who are well-versed in mystery, suspense, and enjoy alternating timelines, multiple points of view, and an unreliable narrator trope.

However, if you’re looking for a more twisty or thrilling ride with sharper characters, you may not find this to be up your alley.

Rating and Final Take

I truly enjoyed this novel. I appreciated how it made me check my bias concerning women who are victims of domestic abuse situations and not be so quick to judge or victim-blame, but extend empathy and grace.  It also taught me the importance of sisterhood and why it’s essential we look out for each other and do our best to highlight problematic men and behavior to protect our friends from harm.
