For my Winter TBR 2024, I’ve created quite an ambitious list of books that I’m eager to read full of Fantasy, Literary Fiction, and Classics totaling over thirty books. I know it’s a little wild to expect to read all these books over three months especially considering I have over twenty library holds. But, I’m nothing if not an ambitious reader and we’ll see if I’m able to read all of these books.

Fantasy
The Fifth Season (The Broken Earth Series #1) by N.K. Jemison
I have heard from many people how magnificent this series is and it features a lot of political intrigue which is one of my favorite things to read about in fantasy. I’ve read very little about what this series is actually about because I want to experience it for myself firsthand.

The Lord of The Rings Trilogy by J.R.R Tolkein
I
t’s a crime and a shame that I’ve never read this series and consider myself to be a great fan of Fantasy. I mean I’ve seen the movies and various spin-offs but I’ve never explored Tolkein’s work. So, I can’t wait to do so this winter.

Young Adult Fantasy
The Cruel Prince (The Folk of the Air #1) by Holly Black
This is a popular series featuring Black’s interpretation of the Fae world. Featuring impressionable characters that have a cult following. I’m excited about starting this series and seeing how it goes.

Caraval (Caraval #1) by Stephanie Garber
Due to my interest in Garber’s other serious Once Upon A Broken Heart, I was told it would be better to start the Caraval series first before diving into the other one. So, here I am finally ready to begin my Caraval journey. I hope it’s as magical and whimsical as the synopsis suggests.

Legendborn (The Legendborn Cycle #1) by Tracy Deonn
The moment I saw this cover the young Black girl desperate to find recognition in the fantasy books she read growing up screamed. I knew I had to have this book and support this author because we need more diversity and representation in this genre. I can’t wait to read this book because all the feedback and reviews I’ve heard are that it’s absolutely magnificent.

House of Ash and Shadow (Gilded City #1) by Leia Stone
I’m going to be oh so for real when I say that while this premise sounds a little interesting I don’t think this book is going to hold a special place in my heart. The only reason I’m adding it to my TBR and attempting to read it is because my dogged curiosity and the need to know everything when it comes to books. I could regret this and I could discover a hidden gem. Time will tell.

We Hunt the Flame (Sands of Arawiya #1) by Hafsah Fizal
This is another book that I’ve heard nothing but good things about and it’s written by an author of color I’m making it a conscious effort to support more BIPOC authors and stories in literary spaces especially genres such as Fantasy and Sci-Fi. Looking forward to exploring this series fairly soon.

War Storm (Red Queen #1) by Victoria Aveyard
It’s time to finally conclude this series that I’ve taken absolutely too long to read. Although I enjoy the political machinations present in this series. The characters are lackluster without dimension and seem to remain stagnant. Following the various dynamics, twists, and turns that have occurred in this story you’d expect a little growth but alas there’s none. Anyway, I’m going to be wrapping up this series this Winter once and for all.

The Gilded Ones by Namina Forna
I’m so here for the diverse representation in the Fantasy genre and the fact that we have another stunning book cover featuring a regal and beautiful young Black girl means everything to me. From reviews I’ve seen of this book and series it features some strong feminist themes and I’m so looking forward to seeing what it’s all about.

Fourth Wing (The Empreyan Series #1) by Rebecca Yarros
This is a widely popular and hyped series and I’m anxiously looking forward to diving into this world and seeing what all the fuss is about.

A Court of Thorns & Roses by Sarah J. Maas
Here’s another popular Romantasy series I haven’t taken the time to explore and dive into. I’ve heard everyone in the bookish community talk about it and they either are feral for it or hate it. Can’t wait to read it and give my own opinion.

A Court of Ravens and Ruins (The Shadow Bound Queen #1) by Eliza Raine
I saw this book being offered with my Prime Reading selection on Amazon and found it to appear rather dark and intriguing and I’m really interested in reading this series.

The series builds in steam and is filled with magic, myth, and delicious tension.
Science Fiction
In Our Likeness by Bryan VanDyke
This sounds like some creepy Black Mirror-type stuff exploring the consequences of living in an AI-run world and what happens to truth and reality. I’m getting all the thought-provoking vibes on this that I’m hoping will include some insightful commentary on the future impact of technology on society.

The War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells
This is classic Science-Fiction and to think I’ve enjoyed the film adaptation of this book and haven’t read yet read it is criminal. Can’t wait to enjoy this title.

Mystery Thriller
Just The Nicest Couple by Mary Kubica
I’m a fan of Kubica’s slow burn mystery thrillers.I enjoy the time it takes to craft a multi-dimensional story with complex characters and twisty reveals that keep you guessing. And I’m certain this story will be no exception and will contain all the elements I’ve come to love and enjoy from Kubica’s writing.

The Unquiet Bones by Loreth Ann White
There’s something about the name of this novel and the unsettling quality of the cover that first intrigued me. Then as I read the synopsis I was itching to learn more about this compelling mystery.

The Last One At The Wedding by Jason Rekulak
I read Rekulak’s debut novel this past spooky season and found it entertaining and enjoyable and I’m looking forward to exploring his recent release.

The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde
There’s something about this story that sounds so sinister, so sensual, and so rich. And I adore stories that make me think and question my perception of things. So, I’m agog to read this tale.

Beloved (Beloved Trilogy #1) by Toni Morrison
I haven’t read enough of Morrison’s work and it’s a sin that I seek to rectify. I’m beyond positive that this story will pack and emotional impact that will stay with me for quite a while.

The Awakening by Kate Chopin
I remember reading this in high school and was startled by the beauty of the madness contained within the pages. It was simply the most prolific and controversial thing I had read at that point in my life and I fell in love with it. So, I feel it’s high time to revisit this classic with a fresh perspective as an older more mature adult and see what feelings and thoughts it provokes within me.

Persuasion by Jane Austen
As much of a Classics snob as I was in high school I’ve never dabbled in the world of Austen. So, I decided to experiment with her works and this novel appealed to me the most.

Persuasion is Jane Austen’s last completed novel. She began it soon after she had finished Emma, completing it in August 1816. She died, aged 41, in 1817; Persuasion was published in December that year (but dated 1818). Persuasion is linked to Northanger Abbey not only by the fact that the two books were originally bound up in one volume and published together, but also because both stories are set partly in Bath, a fashionable city with which Austen was well acquainted, having lived there from 1801 to 1805. Besides the theme of persuasion, the novel evokes other topics, such as the Royal Navy, in which two of Jane Austen’s brothers ultimately rose to the rank of admiral. As in Northanger Abbey, the superficial social life of Bath-well known to Austen, who spent several relatively unhappy and unproductive years there-is portrayed extensively and serves as a setting for the second half of the book. Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare
Perhaps I’m chasing high school this winter in my pursuit to read many classics that I enjoyed or read while still a young adult. Whatever the case I’m excited to revisit Shakespeare espcially after completing If We Were Villains by M.L. Rio which gave me a new appreciation for his work.

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë
Another classic that I admittedly haven’t read. I was more into Langston Hughes, Charles Dickens and the Harlem Renissance. But I’m eager to explore other classics that I’ve missed out on this winter.

The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck
I remember reading various works by Steinbeck in high school and enjoyed discussing the themes that were featured in his books. I had such a great appreciation for his writing style and the topics he covered. Looking forward to immersing myself in his work again and viewing it from a new perspective as a mature woman versus a young adult. I’m sure I’m going to get so much more out of it.

I’ve heard so many good things about this author and her books. But the reason that I’m drawn to read and explore her work is because she’s known for her emotional and melancholic storytelling giving life to the tragedies, struggles, and challenges that people face and are forced to overcome. And this is one of my favorite topics to read about. In this book, we’re following the ups and downs of a female friendship that spans from childhood into adulthood. Can’t wait to crack it open.

This past year I’ve had tremendous great luck with my Kindle reads and picking some really good Fiction reads full of heartwrenching and emotional stories. And I get the feeling that the same is the case with this book.

Call the Canaries Home by Laura Barrow
Another Kindle selection with this story featuring three estranged sisters on a mission to discover what happened to their missing sister. As the youngest of four older sisters I enjoy reading stores about sisterhood. This story is sure to explore the familial relationships and dynamics and provide great insight on these topics and I’m looking forward to it.

The Midnight Library by Matt Haig
Upon hearing the premise for this book I was immediately moved and desperate to add it to my collection. I’m expecting this to really hit home with me and be an emotional impactful read.

An American Marriage by Tayari Jones
This is another must-read book that I’m looking forward to diving into over the winter season. From the premise, it looks like it will be a story that’s equal parts poignant and thought-provoking.

This Motherless Land by Nikki May
I’m super excited about reading this story. I have no particular reason except I believe it’s going to be an impactful novel and I’m interested in learning more about Nigerian culture and the transition and culture shock that comes from leaving your homeland behind to live in another country. Looking forward to diving into it soon!

Nothing Like The Movies( Better Than The Movies #2) by Lynn Painter
I’m not excited that this book is a series because in my mind everything between Wes and Liz was succinctly wrapped up in the first installment. So, imagine my shock and surprise when I found out there was a continuation to this story. Like what the hell? But, I must see this through and follow their story because they are by far one of my favorite fictional couples.
