Winter TBR 2024

For my Winter TBR 2024, I’ve created quite an ambitious list of books that I’m eager to read full of Fantasy, Literary Fiction, and Classics totaling over thirty books. I know it’s a little wild to expect to read all these books over three months especially considering I have over twenty library holds. But, I’m nothing if not an ambitious reader and we’ll see if I’m able to read all of these books.

The Fifth Season (The Broken Earth Series #1)  by N.K. Jemison

book the fifth season by n.k. jemisinI have heard from many people how magnificent this series is and it features a lot of political intrigue which is one of my favorite things to read about in fantasy. I’ve read very little about what this series is actually about because I want to experience it for myself firsthand.

Goodreads Synopsis

This is the way the world ends. Again.

Three terrible things happen in a single day. Essun, a woman living an ordinary life in a small town, comes home to find that her husband has brutally murdered their son and kidnapped their daughter. Meanwhile, mighty Sanze — the world-spanning empire whose innovations have been civilization’s bedrock for a thousand years — collapses as most of its citizens are murdered to serve a madman’s vengeance. And worst of all, across the heart of the vast continent known as the Stillness, a great red rift has been torn into the heart of the earth, spewing ash enough to darken the sky for years. Or centuries.

Now Essun must pursue the wreckage of her family through a deadly, dying land. Without sunlight, clean water, or arable land, and with limited stockpiles of supplies, there will be war all across the Stillness: a battle royale of nations not for power or territory, but simply for the basic resources necessary to get through the long dark night. Essun does not care if the world falls apart around her. She’ll break it herself, if she must, to save her daughter.

The Lord of The Rings Trilogy by J.R.R Tolkein

Ithe lord of the rings trilogy by j.r.r.tolkeint’s a crime and a shame that I’ve never read this series and consider myself to be a great fan of Fantasy. I mean I’ve seen the movies and various spin-offs but I’ve never explored Tolkein’s work. So, I can’t wait to do so this winter.

Goodreads Synopsis:

In ancient times the Rings of Power were crafted by the Elven-smiths, and Sauron, the Dark Lord, forged the One Ring, filling it with his own power so that he could rule all others. But the One Ring was taken from him, and though he sought it throughout Middle-earth, it remained lost to him. After many ages it fell by chance into the hands of the hobbit Bilbo Baggins.

From Sauron’s fastness in the Dark Tower of Mordor, his power spread far and wide. Sauron gathered all the Great Rings to him, but always he searched for the One Ring that would complete his dominion.

Caraval (Caraval #1) by Stephanie Garber

book caraval by Stephanie garberDue to my interest in Garber’s other serious Once Upon A Broken Heart, I was told it would be better to start the Caraval series first before diving into the other one. So, here I am finally ready to begin my Caraval journey. I hope it’s as magical and whimsical as the synopsis suggests.

Goodreads Synopsis:

Scarlett Dragna has never left the tiny island where she and her sister, Tella, live with their powerful, and cruel, father. But this year, Scarlett’s long-dreamt-of invitation finally arrives. With the help of a mysterious sailor, Tella whisks Scarlett away to the show. Only, as soon as they arrive, Tella is kidnapped by Caraval’s mastermind organizer, Legend. It turns out that this season’s Caraval revolves around Tella, and whoever finds her first is the winner.

Scarlett has been told that everything that happens during Caraval is only an elaborate performance. Nevertheless she becomes enmeshed in a game of love, heartbreak, and magic. The characters are lackluster without dimension and seem to remain stagnant. Following the various dynamics, twists, and turns that have occurred in this story you’d expect a little growth but alas there’s none. Anyway, I’m going to be wrapping up this series this Winter once and for all.

In this celebrated work Wilde forged a devastating portrait of the effects of evil and debauchery on a young aesthete in late-19th-century England. Combining elements of the Gothic horror novel and decadent French fiction, the book centers on a striking premise: As Dorian Gray sinks into a life of crime and gross sensuality, his body retains perfect youth and vigor while his recently painted portrait grows day by day into a hideous record of evil, which he must keep hidden from the world. The Awakening by Kate Chopin

I remember reading this in high school and was startled by the beauty of the madness contained within the pages. It was simply the most prolific and controversial thing I had read at that point in my life and I fell in love with it. So, I feel it’s high time to revisit this classic with a fresh perspective as an older more mature adult and see what feelings and thoughts it provokes within me.

Goodreads Synopsis:

When first published in 1899, The Awakening shocked readers with its honest treatment of female marital infidelity. Audiences accustomed to the pieties of late Victorian romantic fiction were taken aback by Chopin’s daring portrayal of a woman trapped in a stifling marriage, who seeks and finds passionate physical love outside the confines of her domestic situation.

Aside from its unusually frank treatment of a then-controversial subject, the novel is widely admired today for its literary qualities. Edmund Wilson characterized it as a work “quite uninhibited and beautifully written, which anticipates D. H. Lawrence in its treatment of infidelity.” Although the theme of marital infidelity no longer shocks, few novels have plumbed the psychology of a woman involved in an illicit relationship with the perception, artistry, and honesty that Kate Chopin brought to The Awakening.

Persuasion by Jane Austen

book persuasion by Jane austenAs much of a Classics snob as I was in high school I’ve never dabbled in the world of Austen. So, I decided to experiment with her works and this novel appealed to me the most.

Goodreads Synopsis:

Persuasion is Jane Austen’s last completed novel. She began it soon after she had finished Emma, completing it in August 1816. She died, aged 41, in 1817; Persuasion was published in December that year (but dated 1818). Persuasion is linked to Northanger Abbey not only by the fact that the two books were originally bound up in one volume and published together, but also because both stories are set partly in Bath, a fashionable city with which Austen was well acquainted, having lived there from 1801 to 1805. Besides the theme of persuasion, the novel evokes other topics, such as the Royal Navy, in which two of Jane Austen’s brothers ultimately rose to the rank of admiral. As in Northanger Abbey, the superficial social life of Bath-well known to Austen, who spent several relatively unhappy and unproductive years there-is portrayed extensively and serves as a setting for the second half of the book. In many respects Persuasion marks a break with Austen’s previous works, both in the more biting, even irritable satire directed at some of the novel’s characters and in the regretful, resigned outlook of its otherwise admirable heroine, Anne Elliot, in the first part of the story. Against this is set the energy and appeal of the Royal Navy, which symbolises for Anne and the reader the possibility of a more outgoing, engaged, and fulfilling life, and it is this worldview which triumphs for the most part at the end of the novel.

Goodreads Synopsis:

In Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare creates a violent world, in which two young people fall in love. It is not simply that their families disapprove; the Montagues and the Capulets are engaged in a blood feud.

In this death-filled setting, the movement from love at first sight to the lovers’ final union in death seems almost inevitable. As her feelings for Rochester develop, Jane gradually uncovers Thornfield Hall’s terrible secret, forcing her to make a choice. The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck

book grapes of wrath by John steinbeckI remember reading various works by Steinbeck in high school and enjoyed discussing the themes that were featured in his books. I had such a great appreciation for his writing style and the topics he covered. Looking forward to immersing myself in his work again and viewing it from a new perspective as a mature woman versus a young adult. I’m sure I’m going to get so much more out of it.

Goodreads Synopsis:

First published in 1939, Steinbeck’s Pulitzer Prize-winning epic of the Great Depression chronicles the Dust Bowl migration of the 1930s and tells the story of one Oklahoma farm family, the Joads—driven from their homestead and forced to travel west to the promised land of California. Out of their trials and their repeated collisions against the hard realities of an America divided into Haves and Have-Nots evolves a drama that is intensely human yet majestic in its scale and moral vision, elemental yet plainspoken, tragic but ultimately stirring in its human dignity. A portrait of the conflict between the powerful and the powerless, of one man’s fierce reaction to injustice, and of one woman’s stoical strength, the novel captures the horrors of the Great Depression and probes into the very nature of equality and justice in America. At once a naturalistic epic, captivity narrative, road novel, and transcendental gospel, Steinbeck’s powerful landmark novel is perhaps the most American of American Classics.

Firefly Lane Kristin Hannah

book firefly lane by Kristin hannahI’ve heard so many good things about this author and her books. But the reason that I’m drawn to read and explore her work is because she’s known for her emotional and melancholic storytelling giving life to the tragedies, struggles, and challenges that people face and are forced to overcome. And this is one of my favorite topics to read about. In this book, we’re following the ups and downs of a female friendship that spans from childhood into adulthood. Can’t wait to crack it open.

Goodreads Synopsis:

In the turbulent summer of 1974, Kate Mularkey has accepted her place at the bottom of the eighth-grade social food chain. Then, to her amazement, the “coolest girl in the world” moves in across the street and wants to be her friend. Tully Hart seems to have it all—beauty, brains, ambition. On the surface they are as opposite as two people can be: Kate, doomed to be forever uncool, with a loving family who mortifies her at every turn. Tully, steeped in glamour and mystery, but with a secret that is destroying her. They make a pact to be best friends forever; by summer’s end they’ve become TullyandKate. Inseparable.

So begins Kristin Hannah’s magnificent new novel. Spanning more than three decades and playing out across the ever-changing face of the Pacific Northwest, Firefly Lane is the poignant, powerful story of two women and the friendship that becomes the bulkhead of their lives.

From the beginning, Tully is desperate to prove her worth to the world. Abandoned by her mother at an early age, she longs to be loved unconditionally. In the glittering, big-hair era of the eighties, she looks to men to fill the void in her soul. But in the buttoned-down nineties, it is television news that captivates her. She will follow her own blind ambition to New York and around the globe, finding fame and success . . . and loneliness.

Kate knows early on that her life will be nothing special. Throughout college, she pretends to be driven by a need for success, but all she really wants is to fall in love and have children and live an ordinary life. Call the Canaries Home by Laura Barrow

book call the canaries home by Laura barrowAnother Kindle selection with this story featuring three estranged sisters on a mission to discover what happened to their missing sister. As the youngest of four older sisters I enjoy reading stores about sisterhood. This story is sure to explore the familial relationships and dynamics and provide great insight on these topics and I’m looking forward to it.

Goodreads Synopsis:

Three estranged sisters reconnect in their Louisiana hometown to face an unresolved past in a heartfelt novel about family, grief, secrets, and forgiveness.

Savannah was four years old when her twin sister, Georgia, went missing from their small Louisiana town, fracturing their family. But coming home means confronting old ghosts…and their stubborn grandmother, Meemaw.

An American Marriage by Tayari Jones

photo of book an american marriage by tayari jonesThis is another must-read book that I’m looking forward to diving into over the winter season. From the premise, it looks like it will be a story that’s equal parts poignant and thought-provoking.

Goodreads Synopsis:

Newlyweds Celestial and Roy are the embodiment of both the American Dream and the New South. He is a young executive, and she is an artist on the brink of an exciting career. But as they settle into the routine of their life together, they are ripped apart by circumstances neither could have imagined. Roy is arrested and sentenced to twelve years for a crime Celestial knows he didn’t commit. Though fiercely independent, Celestial finds herself bereft and unmoored, taking comfort in Andre, her childhood friend, and best man at their wedding. As Roy’s time in prison passes, she is unable to hold on to the love that has been her center. After five years, Roy’s conviction is suddenly overturned, and he returns to Atlanta ready to resume their life together.

This stirring love story is a profoundly insightful look into the hearts and minds of three people who are at once bound and separated by forces beyond their control. An American Marriage is a masterpiece of storytelling, an intimate look deep into the souls of people who must reckon with the past while moving forward—with hope and pain—into the future.

This Motherless Land by Nikki May

cover of book this motherless land by nikki mayI’m super excited about reading this story. I have no particular reason except I believe it’s going to be an impactful novel and I’m interested in learning more about Nigerian culture and the transition and culture shock that comes from leaving your homeland behind to live in another country. Looking forward to diving into it soon!

Goodreads Synopsis:

Quiet Funke is happy in Nigeria. She loves her art teacher mother, her professor father, and even her annoying little brother (most of the time). But when tragedy strikes, she’s sent to England, a place she knows only from her mother’s stories. To her dismay, she finds the much-lauded estate dilapidated, the food tasteless, the weather grey. Worse still, her mother’s family are cold and distant. With one exception: her cousin Liv.

Free-spirited Liv has always wanted to break free of her joyless family. She becomes fiercely protective of her little cousin, and her warmth and kindness give Funke a place to heal. The two girls grow into adulthood the closest of friends.

But the choices their mothers made haunt Funke and Liv and when a second tragedy occurs their friendship is torn apart. Against the long shadow of their shared family history, each woman will struggle to chart a path forward, separated by country, misunderstanding, and ambition.

Moving between Somerset and Lagos over the course of two decades, This Motherless Land is a sweeping examination of identity, culture, race, and love that asks how we find belonging and whether a family’s generational wrongs can be righted.

Nothing Like The Movies( Better Than The Movies #2)  by Lynn Painter

cover of nothing like the movies by lynn painterI’m not excited that this book is a series because in my mind everything between Wes and Liz was succinctly wrapped up in the first installment. So, imagine my shock and surprise when I found out there was a continuation to this story. Like what the hell? But, I must see this through and follow their story because they are by far one of my favorite fictional couples.

Goodreads Synopsis for Better Than The Movies:

Perpetual daydreamer Liz Buxbaum gave her heart to Michael a long time ago. But her cool, aloof forever crush never really saw her before he moved away. Now that he’s back in town, Liz will do whatever it takes to get on his radar – and maybe snag him as a prom date – even befriend Wes Bennet.

The annoyingly attractive next-door neighbor might seem like a prime candidate for romantic-comedy fantasies, but Wes has only been a pain in Liz’s butt since they were kids. Pranks involving frogs and decapitated lawn gnomes do not a potential boyfriend make. Yet, somehow, Wes and Michael are hitting it off, which means Wes is Liz’s in.

But as Liz and Wes scheme to get Liz noticed by Michael so she can have her magical prom moment, she’s shocked to discover that she likes being around Wes. And as they continue to grow closer, she must reexamine everything she thought she knew about love – and rethink her own ideas of what happily ever after should look like.
